(PLEASANTON, Calif.) A man was killed while walking his dog in Pleasanton early Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle, East Bay Times reports.

The collision happened at approximately 6 a.m., leaving 66-year-old Mark Fiala dead, authorities said.

The man was walking in the crosswalk while walking north across Newton Way. The driver was headed east on Stoneridge Drive before the collision took place.

The man’s dog was also struck but only suffered minor injuries. The dog was taken to a vet for treatment.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police have not determined if drugs and alcohol played a role in the collision.

Authorities closed down a portion of Stoneridge Drive between Newton Way and Trevor Parkway during the investigation that concluded at 11 a.m.

Pleasanton police ask anyone with additional information on the collision to call the department at 925-931-5100.
