Rome 38, River Ridge 21
Time to throw away the donut, the one that had been grown stale sitting under Rome High School's football win total since Aug. 21. The Wolves basically earned their first win under new head coach Bill Stewart in the 2026 season in the first half Friday, opposition coming from another winless group from Region 6-6A, the River Ridge Knights. The 24-0 halftime cushion Rome enjoyed — which grew to 31 early in the second half — got a little uncomfortable halfway through the fourth quarter. With a bruising touchdown run of 38 yards from Ja'ckijay Robinson in a back-up role, the Wolves were able to get back into celebratory mode and count down the last seconds of a 38-21 victory. The win came on a night of even more celebration of Rome football — the greatest victory of the Wolves era — for the 10-year anniversary of the 2016 state champions. The Barron Stadium video screen showed portions of the win over Buford in Atlanta, and players were introduced along with former head coach John Reid. Rome's struggles in 2026 came to a halt for one night as Stewart used a rotation at quarterback with Zayden Winston and Ja'Tavious Smith

Cass puts stop to late Allatoona rally
ACWORTH -- Allatoona’s slim playoff hopes may have come to an end as it suffered a heartbreaking 21-14 loss against Cass on Friday night at Cobb EMC/Buccaneers Stadium. Allatoona (2-7, 1-4 7AAAAA), which came into the game just outside of the top 32 of the Class AAAAA postseason rankings at No. 37, needed to win their remaining two games to have any chances at reaching the playoffs. A win over a the No. 6 Colonels (8-1, 4-1) would have given the Buccaneers a huge boost in the rankings heading into the final game of the season against Woodland. Unfortunately, the loss most likely ended any hopes of reaching the the state playoffs for the first time since 2022. With the game deadlocked 7-7 at halftime, running back Kalil Charles scored two second half touchdowns. He scored on a 16-yard run on the opening drive of the half, giving the Colonels a 14-7 lead early in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Charles struck again with another big run — this time with a 26-yard touchdown run — as Cass increased the lead to 21-7 and appeared to put away Allatoona for good. Charles rushed for 117 of his

‘It was a blessing’: Local nonprofit raises thousands through golf tournament
Fishes and Loaves Ministry recently held its first fundraiser in the form of a golf tournament, which raised $12,000. The Christian-based nonprofit, which operates both a thrift store and a food pantry for those in need, held its golf tournament last week at Stonebridge Golf Club. “The tournament went far better than we could have ever expected,” said Dillon Guest, co-founder of the nonprofit. “It was great. We had a lot more golfers than we anticipated, a lot more sponsors, and of course that led to many more funds than we anticipated for the ministry. So, it was a blessing.” The tournament was organized by Jenni Parkman, Guest said, and it drew 72 golfers and 26 businesses as sponsors. Fishes and Loaves will use the money to purchase another space to expand its Lindale food pantry to its own location, if there is a space available, he said. The food pantry is in the same location as the thrift store, 3140 Maple Road SE, and it’s a space they have outgrown. Other possible uses for the funding include covering six months of rent at the facility’s current location or providing roughly 12,000 meals, Guest said. “The most important thing we’re

Carter pleased with Allatoona's progress in Year 1
Allatoona closes out the home portion of its regular season schedule when it hosts Cass in a Region 7AAAAA game at Buccaneer Stadium. While Allatoona is 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the region, first-year coach Paul Carter said he is encouraged by the progress his team has made this season against a challenging schedule. “We’ve made a lot of progress as a football team and as a program just in the amount of knowledge our kids have about the work ethic that we’ve kind of tried to instill and the standard we’re trying to bring,” Carter said. “With the playoffs the way they are, it makes it super interesting. I think we have the second hardest schedule of any team in Class AAAAA. So, that being said, we’ve battled and we’ve been in some serious battles and we play hard, so we’ve done well for what we’ve been up against.” With Allatoona’s postseason chances appearing slim as it approaches the last two games of the 2026 campaign – with the Buccaneers finishing the season on the road against Woodland of Cartersville – Carter said the focus for his team is simply to work to improve over its final two contests.
