Cunningham’s blast lifts Armuchee past Model
If there was ever a time to hit a first career home run, Armuchee sophomore Addy Cunningham picked just the right moment. Locked in a scoreless game against cross-town and region rival Model, Cunningham belted a two-run homer to straightaway center field in the fourth inning Thursday to lift the sixth-ranked Indians to a 3-0 win, eliciting a roar and sustained applause from the large home crowd as she crossed home plate. It was made all the more poignant by the fact that Cunningham has been dealing with unspeakable tragedy this past week, suddenly losing her father to a heart attack just last Thursday. Players, coaches and family surrounded Cunningham after the game to give her extra hugs and comfort after her heroics led Armuchee to its 21st consecutive home win. “We went into today knowing that it probably wouldn’t take many runs to win it,” said Armuchee head coach Andy Henderson. “And if anybody deserved to hit a ball like that….” Henderson’s voice cracked as he took a few moments to compose himself. “If anybody deserved to hit a ball out today, it was Addy,” Henderson said through some tears. “I think the only person smiling bigger than me

MABLETON - A 28-point first quarter helped Whitefield Academy cruise to a 56-0 victory over Landmark Christian on homecoming at Wolfpack Stadium. “That quick start is who we are offensively,” Wolfpack coach Robert Walsh said. “We’re going to score points and have our foot on the gas. Then, defensively, I thought we woke up, simplified some things and our boys played really well.” Whitefield Academy (3-3, 1-0 Region 5AA) scored its first of four first quarter touchdowns just 30 seconds into the game on a flea-flicker which saw receiver Ian Kelly connect with fellow receiver Connor Boothe for a 38-yard score. North Cobb (3-1) defeated Paulding County 52-0 before the fall break, while Cherokee (1-3) fell at Etowah 42-17. North Cobb coach Shane Queen said the break gave his team an opportunity to get healthy and focus on self-scouting. “Looking at ourselves, what we made mistakes on in the first few weeks of the season, fixing those things and then looking at our second half of the season, what we can do to get better against the opponents we’ve got coming up. We’ve got the bulk of our region schedule coming up, starting with Cherokee, then North Paulding, then Walton. So our guys know the importance of this time of year, playing our best football. We’ve really worked on North Cobb more than we have our opponents.” Queen said continuing to play complementary football in all three facets of the game is a point of emphasis for his team moving forward. “It all starts with our defense getting short fields the other night, playing well defensively. Canton sisters born with heart condition now play flag football
Two Canton sisters have the same heart condition, but they aren't letting it stop them from living their lives and enjoying playing the sports they love. Eloise Benson, 12, and Edith Benson, 10, both have a congenital complete heart block. This condition requires the girls to have a pacemaker. Edith was diagnosed with the condition in 2016 during her mother's routine pregnancy appointment at 25 weeks. She was also diagnosed with structural heart disease. She had her first procedure, performed by Dr. Subhadra Shashidharan, at 3 months old in the Heart Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to address her structural heart disease. She received her first pacemaker at 5 months old and is now on her third pacemaker. Eloise's story is different. Unlike her sister, she does not have structural heart disease, and she was not diagnosed with a congenital complete heart block at birth. She was diagnosed much later in her life, and received her first pacemaker in August 2024. Doctors found that Eloise had a low heart rate during a pre-operative appointment to have her tonsils removed. She was later diagnosed with a congenital complete heart block. She also has Type 1 diabetes, diagnosed exactly five years
