Chili cook-off and Truck or Treat set for Saturday
Papa Dew’s Chili will go for a coveted third win Saturday as 15 of the region’s best chili-cooking teams face off at Ridge Ferry Park, with bragging rights on the line. Gates open at 10 a.m. for the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department’s annual chili cook-off, which runs through 3 p.m. It will feature an arts-and-crafts festival with dozens of vendors and the department’s annual Truck or Treat event. “Papa Dew’s seems like the team to beat again this year. They have been dominating the chili field and seem a lock for a three-peat,” Special Services Manager Tyler Stinson said. “But don’t count out Cave Spring’s Chili Pros; they could be a dark horse this year.” Stinson said the park will be packed with plenty of family fun for everyone. “We’ve combined the chili cook-off with Truck or Treat, so Ridge Ferry Park will have a ton of activities Saturday,” he said. “We will also have inflatables for the kids. It will be a good day for everyone.” Parking is $5 per car. The event is free, but chili sample bracelets are $5 each and access to the bounce houses is also $5. New Mexican restaurant to open in Waleska this fall
After working in restaurants for 25 years—10 as a general manager – Lorena Jaramillo decided it was time to start her own business. She plans to open Milpas Cucina at 6874 Reinhardt College Parkway in Waleska by the end of October. A Tex-Mex restaurant emphasizing foods raised in the tradition of the Maya and other Mesoamerican peoples, Milpas Cucina will be open seven days a week with seating for about 90 people, including outdoor dining on a covered patio and porch. The restaurant will also include a full bar with seating for 12. “We like that Waleska is a small town,” Jaramillo said. “I come from a small town in Mexico. People in Waleska have said to us, ‘Finally, we’re getting our own Mexican restaurant.’” Currently the general manager of a Canton restaurant, Jaramillo will retire from that job when her new business opens. She and her husband, Julio, are working to prepare for the Milpas Cucina opening with Enrique and Alejandro Carrillo, two brothers who have worked with Lorena before. Alejandro will manage the new restaurant, and Enrique will be the chef. The Carrillo brothers, who were born in Guatemala, say living in the United States has given them

A new coffeehouse is coming to Kennesaw
Myth and Legend Coffeehouse is coming to Kennesaw. The coffee shop, located at 2728 Summer Street, near downtown Kennesaw, is set to open in November, just in time for the shop’s seasonal Christmas menu. Kennesaw location general manager Titus Wilson told the Journal Myth and Legend makes all of its syrups in-house and roasts its coffee beans locally with its sister company, Because Coffee, in Dawsonville. The Summer Street shop marks Myth and Legend’s fifth location, and sixth business location including Because Coffee. Wilson said the shop has a rotating seasonal menu with themed drinks, as well as house specialties and everyday drinks. ”Everything else is just, you know, your basic lattes and cappuccinos, cortados, everything that a specialty coffee shop would have. And then we really have extravagant seasonal drinks as well as matcha and chai,” he said. One of the most popular drinks, he said, is the “storyteller latte,” made with espresso, sweetened condensed coconut milk, milk and cinnamon, topped with an option of house made syrups. Myth and Legend also sells a variety of sandwiches and pastries including breakfast bagels, danishes, muffins, coffee cake and more. Wilson said the shop will be the perfect place for students

Around Town: Dumpling Kingdom coming to former Del Taco. Plus, saddle up for West Fest
There’s not a lot of Asian food options in West Rome, so it’s exciting to see that a Dumpling Kingdom is coming to the former Del Taco site at 2114 Shorter Ave. Del Taco opened with much fanfare in 2019, and closed with a whisper in February when its parent company Yadav Enterprises shuttered all its Georgia locations. There is very little information we can share about Dumpling Kingdom so far, except that it’s not a major chain, but it’s got a happy little mascot. The only restaurant by that name with an online presence appears to be a small one in Boston. However, a quick visit to the building found signs up advertising handmade soup dumplings, siu mai, sheng jian bao — which are pan-fried steamed pork buns — and fried rice. We’re looking forward to trying it out. County Commission honors state Sen. Chuck Hufstetler State Sen.
