5 Best Restaurants in Hampton, Virginia You Need to Try Before Everyone Else Finds Them
Hampton, Virginia — a city where the Chesapeake Bay whispers against the shore, where shipyards and sunlit neighborhoods meet, where the scent of fried seafood and slow-cooked barbecue drifts through streets lined with history and hope. Here, the city’s spirit is woven from the laughter of families at Buckroe Beach, the wisdom of elders who remember the old jazz clubs, the dreams of students at Hampton University, and the quiet pride of those who have called this place home for generations.

Donna Davis: Two brothers, two bands and a family legacy in music
At first glance, they look a lot alike, with matching mops of strawberry blonde hair and instruments in hand. But ask them and they will tell you that Zack favors the Barbee family and James their mother’s side, the Carters. It’s a tale of two brothers: one that came to Greenville arguably during the worst of times, in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, and left with a degree and touring in a successful band that formed here, and a brother who is blazing his own trail with some parallels. James and Zack Barbee were born and raised in Concord before coming to Greenville to pursue their education at East Carolina University in 2020 and 2023, respectively. That means they have quite a lot in common with another set of sibling musicians: the Avett Brothers (also from Concord). In fact, James said he has jammed with the Avetts' father on several occasions. For the record, James answers to James or Ryan (his middle name, favored by family). “As far back as I can go before taking formal lessons, we used to go hang out with our dad every Saturday, running errands with him,” James said. “He was a big

Albemarle Neighbor: Bowman turns late-night baking into Edenton home business
In Edenton, Ashley Bowman spends her nights mixing up batches of sweets for her Take It EZ Home Bakery. “I’ve always liked to cook,” Bowman said. “This is what I do for fun.” Bowman, a pharmacy operations manager at the Walgreens in Edenton, started the home bakery more than a year ago. She named it after the initials of her sons, Eason and Zane. She does her baking at night, after her family has gone to sleep, filling the house with the aroma of desserts in the oven. Bowman makes a variety of cinnamon rolls, including cookies and cream, a favorite of one of her sons. She also makes pound cakes, but cake pops are among her most popular items. She can make them in a range of cake flavors and customize them for special occasions, including themed cake pops for children’s birthdays and school-themed ones that have become popular teacher gifts. Bowman said she was inspired to bake by her grandmother, who died three years ago. “She would dip everything in chocolate during Christmas,” Bowman said. She also turns to TikTok for ideas. “I put a twist on it to make it my own,” she said. Bowman will sell

Voters return Corprew, Nelson, Ward; approve ABC store, mixed drinks
All three Republican county commissioners whose seats were on the ballot won new terms Tuesday, according to unofficial results. Tim Corprew led the field with 2,326 votes, or 52% of the 4,452 votes cast. Wallace Nelson received 1,104 votes (25%), and James Ward received 1,022 (23%). Corprew collected 1,474 of his votes during early voting, which ran from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31. Nelson received 746 early votes, and Ward received 642. In other races, Sheriff Shelby White was reelected without opposition to another four-year term. White ran as a Democrat in 2018, when he defeated Republican Jim Bray, and again in 2022. He has since switched parties and ran as a Republican on Tuesday. Clerk of Superior Court Todd Tilley also ran unopposed for another four-year term. Tilley ran unopposed as a Democrat in 2018 and 2022 before running as a Republican this year. Voters also overwhelmingly approved two local referendums. The first authorizes the county to establish an ABC board and operate an ABC store. The Town of Hertford already has both. The measure passed 4,250 to 1,200. The second allows the sale of mixed drinks, or liquor by the drink, at restaurants, private clubs and other qualified
