Downtown trees will have to be cut
Despite previous efforts to keep trees intact on Galax’s Main Street, they’ll need to come down in order to be compliant with planned handicapped-accessible sidewalks and crosswalks. The new sidewalks and crosswalks must comply with standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Blevins resigns from Elkin School Board
During the public comment portion of Monday’s Elkin City Schools Board of Education meeting, school board member Johnny Blevins submitted his resignation. Blevins was elected to the board in 2022. WALNUT-COVE — South Stokes’ Justin Rogers has resigned after one season as the head football coach for the Sauras. In recognition of April as Distracted Driving Month, Alliance Insurance Services and Magnolia Eye Care held a competition in which students submitted videos about the dangers of distracted driving. Galax City Council heard public speakers at their May 13 meeting regarding the proposed real estate tax change from $1 to 92¢ per $100 assessed value. Later in the meeting, council voted to adopt the new real estate tax rate, along with the city and school board budgets.

APEX — In the inaugural beach volleyball season at West Stokes, the duo of Cameron Ring and Presley Barker finished tied for fifth in the state at the N.C.
