Throwback Thursday: Mayhem over the Mansard Hotel
We recently shared the history of the Helm Hotel in Downtown Bowling Green. Here’s another, not so pretty, story of a bygone hotel in Downtown, this one ending with fire and politics. Built in the 1890s and named for its mansard gable roof, the Mansard Hotel was on the corner of Main and Center streets. Fifty-five years ago, it burned to the ground. In July 1969, mayhem at the Mansard ensued with a deadly blaze and political war between the fire department, city officials, and Mansard management.
