MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — The Morehead City Police and Fire-EMS departments are encouraging the public to participate in their inaugural Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on Thursday, May 9.

This American Red Cross blood drive will be held at the Morehead City Recreation Center, 1600 Fisher Street, from 7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Appointments must be made in advance, and each participant can have their donation count for either the Police or the Fire department’s total.

“Being a Carteret County resident, the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is not just a competition, it’s a crucial initiative that embodies the spirit of community and compassion,” said Kristin Willis, with the American Red Cross. “It serves as a reminder of the constant need for blood donations to save lives. I am so thankful to be a part of such a giving community.”

This mission is important to both Morehead City departments, and they are encouraging donors to step up in a show of community support.

“Help save someone’s life with your donation,” said Chief Courtney Wade. “Morehead City Fire-EMS employee Scot Camden has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, and has already received a blood transfusion as part of his treatment process. Thanks to previous blood donors, Scot’s transfusion was successful. Your donation may save the life of a family member, coworker or close friend. Come out and support Team Red. We are in the business of saving lives, and you can help do just that by joining Team Red on May 9th.”

Likewise, Morehead City Police Chief Bryan Dixon is encouraging the community to support the initiative in honor of others.

“Giving blood helps people, period,” he said. “From accident and burn victims to those undergoing lifesaving surgeries and fighting cancer. Furthermore, it has been linked to bettering your own health by reducing blood pressure and risk of heart attack when done regularly. Is there any greater way to truly be a part of your community? As for why go Team Blue? In honor of the 136 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2023, and the 55 who have given their all in 2024 so far – specifically the four fallen in our own state just this week.”

Schedule an appointment to give blood or platelets by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org , or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
