Police Identify Woman Who Opened Fire on Officers in Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Police officials have released additional information regarding the Montclair Police shooting that occurred on Monday.

According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a police-involved shooting in Montclair, NJ on April 15.

The suspect, who has been identified as Maryann Swain, age 39, of Montclair has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Unlawful Possession of a
Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

According to authorities, Montclair Police received a call at approximately 1:09 p.m., in which, officers were dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of Forest Street on reports of an armed person. As the officers approached the residence, they were met with gunfire.

One Montclair Police officer, Michael J. Medrano, age 33, was struck in the shoulder area, which prompted a second officer to returned fire, thus striking Swain.

"The wounded officer and the suspect were transported to University Hospital in Newark for
treatment of non-life- threatening injuries," says law enforcement officials. The injured officer has since been released from the hospital.

Swain remains hospitalized. Once released, she will be held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending an appearance in Essex County Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court.

The charges against the defendant are merely allegations. She is presumed innocent at this time.
