Authorities have identified the Montclair police officer shot by a woman who was then wounded by another officer Monday afternoon.

Michael Medrano, 33, was shot in the shoulder while responding to reports of an armed person on the 100 block of Forest Street at 1:09 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. The other officer returned fire, striking 39-year-old Maryann Swain.

Medrano and Swain were taken to University Hospital in Newark with non-life-threatening injuries. Medrano was released by Tuesday afternoon, the release stated.

Swain, who remains hospitalized, was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. When she is released from the hospital, she will be held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance.

"I am extremely grateful that the Montclair Police Officer wounded in the line of duty today is recovering," Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller posted on Facebook on Monday night. "Thanks to the fast response and professionalism of our Police Department, the suspect involved in the shooting has been apprehended. Our dedicated first responders put their lives on the line to serve our community and today is a sobering reminder of the risks they take to keep us safe."

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the prosecutor's office tip line at 877-847-7432.
