High tides flooded coastal communities again in Los Angeles and Orange counties Wednesday as coastal flood alerts were extended through Friday. In Orange County's Sunset Beach neighborhood, floodwater spilled into streets near Pacific Coast Highway and Park Street. Potentially record-breaking high tides could cause more damage along Long Beach peninsula

Crews in Long Beach took advantage of the low tide to shore up vulnerable areas before potentially record-breaking high tides could batter the already-disrupted coastline. The Long Beach Fire Department said it saw tides reach just over 8 feet, although experts expected them to be 6 feet. Ahead of even more high surf, emergency personnel built massive sand berms in an effort to protect homes along the coast.

Something ominous just hit California: rain. The life-giving water that normally hydrates people and crops brings an aura of dread this autumn, thanks to the strongest El Niño ever recorded. While the phenomenon causes severe drought and heat in many parts of the world, historically it’s brought extraordinary rainfall to the Golden State. The monstrous El Niño of 1997 and 1998, for instance, caused widespread flooding and debris flows (made not just of water and dirt, but big chunks of rock), destroying property and killing residents.

Venice Has an Evacuation Problem-and Trouble Getting Residents to Prepare

VENICE - By design, Venice faces a series of major risks in a natural disaster; its narrow roads and intertwining one-way streets increase the odds of gridlock should an evacuation occur. On a recent Saturday afternoon, the Venice Neighborhood Council (VNC) hosted the second installment of its three-part tsunami preparedness series at the Oakwood Recreation Center to connect people with resources to prepare Venetians to be more resilient should a disaster occur. "Flooding is a classic here," said Keith Harrison, Chair of the VNC Resiliency Committee, which works with the city to educate and prepare west siders for natural disasters and emergencies. "I tell friends, no, I do not live on the Venice Canals until it rains a lot," he added with a laugh. The Santa Monica fault runs through the Bay, and even though it is smaller in comparison to other California faults, the chances of it triggering an underwater landslide are possible, pushing up deep water which can turn into tsunamis. El Niño raises the risk of more intense tsunamis, as the warmer ocean temperatures caused by the phenomenon cause water molecules to expand, raising sea levels and the volume of water that could be pushed up should
