Court order puts Glenville back in Ohio football playoffs, but another twist follows

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that Glenville's (OH) football team had been removed from postseason eligibility this year on Thursday, Oct. 29. Two days later, that decision was overturned, for the moment, by a court order. The OHSAA released a statement late Friday night saying that a court order had been granted, giving the program a temporary restraining order and allowing them to play despite the original decision from the association. ”Following the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s removal of Cleveland Glenville from the football playoffs on Thursday (Oct. 29), the OHSAA is aware of the court order issued today (Friday, Oct. 30) requiring the playing of the football playoff game between Glenville and University School,” the statement reads. “The OHSAA stands by its ruling issued on Thursday (Oct. 29). However, the OHSAA will comply with the court order and is working with the two schools to reschedule the game sometime this weekend. ...A hearing is scheduled for Monday. To clarify information presented this afternoon, the OHSAA first requested student residential information from Cleveland Metropolitan School District on September 28. The OHSAA received an initial batch of information from CMSD on Oct. 22. On Thursday (Oct. 29) in

Akron Buchtel Community Learning Center. (Akron Public Schools) AKRON, Ohio — Bryan Williams, who serves as the head football coach and athletic director for Akron Buchtel CLC, has been placed on administrative leave, according to Akron Public Schools. Statement from Akron Public Schools Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications Joanne Issacc: “As this is a personnel matter, the District will not comment further on the circumstances or details.” That’s the official line. What we do know is that Tahj Dent has stepped in as interim head coach, a role he’ll continue in “pending further notice.” The District wants to ensure “continuity for our student-athletes and football program,” said Joanne Isacc, APS, Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications. Williams did not coach in an October 17 game against Akron Garfield CLC or an October 24 game against Akron East CLC, which was their final regular-season game and was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. What happened? According to recent reports, Akron Public Schools self-reported to the Ohio High School Athletic Association that it had academically ineligible players [no exact number of players] playing before the Akron Garfield game, which also implicated Akron North in the same situation. Because of the self-reported violations,

Chippewa students have been taking learning beyond the classroom with outdoor adventures, hands-on lessons and a community literacy event. The recent activities included lessons on animal migration, a fifth-grade trip to Camp Y-Noah and Reading Under the Lights, according to a community announcement. The district also recently inducted 18 juniors and seniors into the National Honor Society. Second graders at Chippewa Elementary learned about migration by stepping into the role of migrating wood ducks. Kelly Reily of the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District helped students follow a migration route from the ducks' nesting grounds in Ohio to Florida. Fifth graders took their learning outdoors at Camp Y-Noah. Students tried canoeing, climbing and archery, hiked trails and participated in team-building activities. Reading Under the Lights Chippewa's annual Reading Under the Lights literacy event brought elementary students and staff together with Chippewa High School athletes and community members. Pete the Cat also joined the event, which featured games and reading activities. The district also recognized its newest National Honor Society members. Northwest's run game proves too strong for Cleveland Central Catholic

Northwest running back Conner Stephenson looks to run past a Cleveland Central Catholic defender as teammate Sanad Abueteen looks on late in the game. (Photo: Chuck Cordes/Ohsfbemdia.com) CANAL FULTON, Ohio — The Northwest Indians advance to the second round of the OHSAA playoffs after they defeat Cleveland Central Catholic 36-16. They focused on a powerful ground attack with Conner Stephenson and Jakob Garber, consuming a lot of time early in the game to gain dominance. Combined, they ran for over 300 yards. "We've been that way all year," said Coach DeMarco, speaking on his team's strong running game. "And we wanted to ride 44 and 32, and we started with that in week one." They were so effective at controlling the clock, spending more than eight minutes in the second quarter to take the lead, and in another possession they controlled it for over six minutes. Cleveland Central Catholic could not get any offense going throughout the game, settling for punts and giveaways from a solid defense by the Indians that got two interceptions from Sanad Abueteen early and late in the game. "It's probably the game plan going forward," said Stephenson as he talked about the success of the

Ohio high school football powerhouse banned from playoffs amid probe

An investigation into a player's eligibility has removed Glenville, one of Ohio's premier high school football programs, from postseason play. The Akron Beacon Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported that the Cleveland-area program's postseason ban stems from an audit of fall-sport participation that found many of the team's football players should be playing for other schools. This is not the first time that Glenville has received this punishment for the same situation. The other time was in 2018, when the program was also fined $5,000 and placed on probation for three years. According to the report, Ginn Academy, a non-OHSAA-member magnet school, is at the center of the investigation. The school does not offer sports, and athletes there can participate at other schools as long as they are in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and live closest to that school. The report noted that the OHSAA is reviewing the extent of the violations and whether they extend to other schools in the area. They said there is no timetable for when the investigation will be completed or whether other penalties will be added. The Tarblooders are 8-2 on the year and were set to enter the postseason as
