    LaVoys celebrating 50th anniversary

    MONROE -- Michael and Rebecca LaVoy are observing their 50th wedding anniversary today. Anniversary plans include touring the New England states and visiting friends. A family dinner also is planned in June.

    Mr. LaVoy married Rebecca Hurley of Monroe May 10, 1974, at St. Michael Catholic Church. The Rev. Hugo Noetzel officiated.

    The couple's sons and daughter-in-law are Heath and Landon and Huan (Yang) of Monroe. They also have three granddaughters.

    Mr. LaVoy, a 1970 graduate of Huron High School, worked for eight years for G. Syder and Sons as a heavy equipment operator. He served in the Army's armor division, 1972-73. In 1975 he became a deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, serving in many positions over 30 years, including liaison officer at Monroe High School and Monroe County Community College. After retiring in 2005, he became a bailiff for Monroe's circuit and district courts, retiring in 2016 after more than 12 years of service.

    He enjoys working on his show cars and collecting antique memorabilia. He is a member of the National Street Rod Association, Ford V8 Club and the American Austin Bantam Club.

    Mrs. LaVoy, a 1970 graduate of St. Mary Academy, was a cashier and checkout supervisor for the Monroe Kmart store from 1971-81. The couple met at Kmart. From 1990-2010, she was an instructional assistant in the childcare and preschool programs at Monroe Public Schools, retiring in 2010.

    For 12 years she was a team captain for Monroe County Relay for Life. Mrs. LaVoy has been a cake designer and decorator for more than 45 years and plans to make the couple's anniversary cake. She also enjoys crafting with their granddaughters. She is a member of SMA Alumni, Royal Neighbors of America and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Associations.

    The LaVoys are members of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoy traveling in their antique cars and street rods and attending national car shows. They also enjoy family trips and attending their granddaughters' events.
