Bedford soccer rallies from 4-0 deficit to salvage a tie with Monroe

TEMPERANCE – Monroe’s girls soccer rolled to a 7-1 win over Bedford when the teams met last month.

The rematch Thursday night looked like it might be more of the same.

Monroe dominated the first half in building a 4-0 lead, but Bedford took command after the intermission to earn a 4-4 tie.

Elizabeth Klocek collected two goals and three saves to lead the Mules.

Kam Lifton and Libby Ewing recorded the other goals and Clifton added a pair of assists. Madden Mosley was strong in the midfield.

“This year we’ve played three bad halves against Monroe and one good one,” Bedford coach Kellie Grosteffon said. “They don’t play the same possession style soccer via central midfield as the other teams in our league so it was an adjustment to their style of through play that we just didn’t do well with until the last half of our second meeting.”

Grosteffon said her team is playing better in the second half of the season.

“We had a lot of players out with injuries and didn’t have a great game first time (against Monroe), she said. “We have otherwise had similar outcomes and scores in every opponent we’ve both faced this season.”

Emily Eshenroder had a pair of goals for Monroe and Aubrey Cowan and Chloe Pabin also found the back of the net. Ally Marcero and Zoe Leach led the Trojan defense.

Jefferson-Mason battles

MELVINDALE – Three late goals burned Jefferson-Erie Mason in a 5-2 loss to Melvindale Thursday.

Camryn Cousino scored both goals for the Bears and Madison Cox led the defense.

“In the second half, we had a couple of bad breaks and Melvindale capitalized on them,” Jefferson-Mason coach Dave Cousino said. “The girls are working hard and are going in the right direction.”

TRACK AND FIELD

Monroe’s Simmons shines

MONROE – Teegan Simmons of Monroe gave the home fans something to cheer about by winning the shot-put (50-10) and discus (164-9) and taking second in the low hurdles at the Southeastern Conference Red championships Thursday.

Bedford’s highlight was a 2-3 finish by Liam Agius and Sawyer Ullery in the high hurdles.

Jack Durivage of Bedford (800) and Monroe’s Andrew Foshag (3,200) took thirds.

Bedford’s boys took fifth place with 66 points and Monroe finished eighth with 41. Bedford’s girls were seventh with 41 and Monroe eighth with 11.5.

Saline’s boys (131) and Ann Arbor Pioneer’s girls (158.5) won the team titles.

Monroe’s Alexandra Butler was third in the long jump and Ava Eby (discus) and Madyson Wallace (long jump) were fourth for Bedford.

Tight loss for Bedford

CHELSEA – Carter Klawonn, Camden Price and Jayce Yarad all shot 40 and Taleon Guess added a 41, but Bedford fell 156-161 to Chelsea at Inverness Golf Club Thursday.

Nathan Micua and Brady Bischoff both carded a 51 for Bedford’s junior varsity.
