Contemporary Mexican ensemble brings its ‘intricate harmonies’ to Modesto

The Villalobos Brothers bring contemporary Mexican music to the Gallo Center for the Arts. The Modesto Symphony Orchestra also brings a Beethoven classic as part of its next program at the center. These are just two events among the celebrations, music and more set in the Modesto region May 4-10.

The contemporary Mexican ensemble The Villalobos Brothers is coming to the Gallo Center. “Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully fuse and celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music,” according to the theater’s website. The ensemble will be joined in the show by Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles

The Modesto Symphony Orchestra presents Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, led by Music Director Nicholas Hersh. The weekend’s program at the Gallo Center includes Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, Amy Beach’s Peace I Leave With You and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor. The concerts will include the MSO Chorus. Beethoven’s symphony will feature guests soprano Georgiana Adams, mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich, tenor Alex Boyer and bass Matt Boehler.

South Modesto Businesses United presents its Cinco de Mayo parade and celebration, this year marking the “Day of the Battle of Puebla.” The parade on Crows Landing Road will be followed by a celebration at El Rematito.

May the Fourth be With You
“Star Wars” and the film series’ connection to Modesto via Downey High graduate George Lucas are celebrated in the annual May the Fourth be With You event in downtown Modesto. There will be lightsaber battles, live music, vendors and more.
Entertainment, car and RV shows, food vendors and more will be featured at the Ceres Street Faire. New this year is a low-rider car and bicycle show on May 5 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Tribute group One Of These Nights will perform the music of the Eagles at a show at the State Theatre. The group re-creates the harmonic sounds of the legendary group’s hit songs including “Best of My Love,” “Witchy Woman,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “The Long Run” and “Hotel California.”
Sierra Repertory Theatre presents musical comedy “The Drowsy Chaperone ” at its East Sonora Theatre. The five-time Tony Award-winning production follows a musical theater lover who stumbles onto his favorite show album, only to have it spring to life in the middle of his apartment living room.
Central West Ballet will hold a Masquerade Gala in Modesto. There will be performances featuring fencing and selections from its upcoming production of “Romeo & Juliet.” There also will be silent and live auctions. Masquerade attire is optional for the fundraiser for CWB.
The Stanislaus Arts Council will present the “Graffiti Days” exhibition featuring regional artists. The showcase celebrates Modesto, highlighting its cultural heritage, agricultural roots and car culture.
