MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Mobile Museum of Art is preparing to celebrate a “milestone birthday” on October 26 by opening a new exhibit and hosting a birthday bash, according to a release.

“To commemorate MMofA’s milestone birthday, our team has been working hard to ensure that the galleries are filled with breathtaking art,” MMofA Executive Director Jon Carfagno said. “We look forward to inviting the community as well as visitors to our region to celebrate with us.”

    The Art on View:

1960s Hard Edge Op Art: Tribute to the Responsive Eye is the main focus as it is being unveiled on the museum’s birthday. The exhibit “features works from optical art (abbreviated as op art) and hard-edge movements and artists such as Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Gene Davis, Julian Stanczak, and Frank Stella,” according to the release.

In addition to the opening of the new exhibit, museum officials say there will also be “several exhibitions with notable pieces on view,” including:

    • (Un) Settled: The Landscape in American Art: “will open on October 12, 2024, and includes works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Benny Andrews, Jeffrey Gibson, Ed Ruscha, and Andrew Wyeth.”
    • An installation of Surrealist masterworks by leading figures in the movement — including Peter Blume, Max Ernst, Kay Sage, and Yves Tanguy — which have been generously lent by The Museum of Modern Art, New York as part of Art Bridges’ Collection Loan Partnership program”

Though art is the main focus of the museum, the birthday celebration will also include a birthday bash.

    The Birthday Bash:

Attendees to the bash will be able to celebrate along with the museum with a Beatles tribute band.

The bash will be a ticketed event, according to the release.

    • Pre-sale tickets to the 1960s-themed bash will be available on May 17 for MMofA members, donors, and sponsors at $175 for one and $350 for two.
    • General admission tickets will open on June 17 at the same price.

For those who do not want to pay to celebrate the museum, a community birthday party will be held on November 9, according to the release. The museum said that more details will be unveiled in the coming months.
