Marco Island voters to consider six vying for three City Council seats

How to handle growth, new development, redevelopment and tourism on Marco Island are among the key issues for all the candidates. So is water quality — the city has been on a federal impairment list since 2019 after two years of higher than acceptable nitrogen levels in water that flows through city via canals and a river.

Exclusive Florida golf club faces new hurdle after county misses deadline

Opponents could get another chance to fight the conversion of a long-time citrus grove into an exclusive, private golf club in East Naples. According to a letter from FloridaCommerce, Collier County missed the state's deadline to submit its final approval of a required growth plan amendment by more than a year. After an hours-long hearing on Sept. 22, county commissioners unanimously approved the amendment and rezoning, which faced strong opposition from neighbors who hoped to somehow preserve the 169-acre South Naples Citrus Grove. The state received the county's adopted amendment on Oct. 2. FloridaCommerce deemed it "withdrawn" under state law a few days later because the county took far too long to approve the amendment after the state's initial review last year. As a result of the delay, the state returned the amendment to the county without action — or implementation. The growth plan amendment dates back to 2025 County commissioners voted to transmit the original amendment to the state for review on May 27, 2025. The state sent its review back to the county a little over a month later, on July 2. After the county received the state's comments, it had 180 days to hold the second and

SWFL water infrastructure faces a costly crossroads | Opinion

Every time we turn on a faucet or flush a toilet, we depend on infrastructure most of us rarely see. Beneath Southwest Florida’s growth lies a pressing question: Can our water and wastewater systems keep pace — and can residents afford what comes next? That question brought regional utility leaders together October 22 at Florida Gulf Coast University for a panel hosted by the Southwest Chapter of the Florida Water Environment Association. Their discussion deserves attention beyond the engineering community. Decisions about pipes, treatment plants and water reuse affect household budgets, public health and the waterways that help define our region. Growth creates an obvious need for additional capacity. But utilities must also replace aging equipment, maintain existing networks and manage rising construction costs. Cape Coral Utilities Director Jeff Pearson discussed the city’s Utilities Expansion Program (UEP), which brings drinking water, sewer service and reclaimed irrigation water to neighborhoods previously served by private wells and septic systems. His account illustrated the financial challenge of extending infrastructure as construction becomes more expensive. Established communities face a related problem: maintaining and replacing older systems with fewer opportunities for new development to help support those investments. Residents understandably question higher bills and assessments.
