Cape Coral launches water consumption alerts to help identify potential leaks

Hurricane Idalia blew large flocks of American flamingos ( Phoenicopterus ruber ) back into Florida in late August 2023. Yet the birds have failed to recolonize in Collier County’s salt marshes and brackish estuaries — thriving nowhere locally except at the Naples Zoo. Although boat traffic flushes foraging flocks, altered freshwater sheetflow and neurotoxic pesticides deplete their invertebrate food supply. These birds rely on filter-feeding in mudflats to consume larvae, amphipods, and shrimp. Naled causes acute aquatic mortality at parts-per-billion levels, while synthetic pyrethroids deployed by the Collier Mosquito Control District (CMCD) adhere to estuarine sediment and destroy crustacean prey at parts-per-trillion levels — whereas Bti offers a one-million-fold safer alternative. First covering a six-square-mile territory in 1950 and adopting Naled during the 1960s, CMCD has expanded its spray area to 765 square miles over the last 20 years and added six turbine aircraft. The vast majority of coastal aerial treatments target salt-marsh nuisance mosquitoes ( Aedes taeniorhynchus ). Conversely, primary human disease vectors such as Culex and Aedes aegypti reproduce mainly in residential containers and inland freshwater habitats. Residents question new I-75 lane expansion plans. What to know

While some parts of a major widening and improvement project for Interstate 75 have been decided, other pieces have not. On Oct. 28, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) held a virtual public meeting on Microsoft Teams to gather input and questions about the proposed addition of auxiliary lanes between Golden Gate Parkway in Collier County and Alico Road in Lee County. The auxiliary lanes are being considered as another way to relieve congestion in Southwest Florida, said Melody Joyner, a corridors program development manager for FDOT. "A portion of these lanes will function as accelerated congestion relief lanes between Immokalee Road and Bonita Beach Road," she said. She explained the purpose of an auxiliary lane in simple terms. "An auxiliary lane allows motorists to travel from an entrance ramp at one interchange to the exit ramp at the next interchange without merging directly into the mainline traffic stream," she said. "This helps separate local traffic from longer-distance travelers, improving overall traffic flow." She offered up an example. "Someone traveling from one interchange to the next can remain in the auxiliary lane, while drivers making longer trips, such as from Sarasota to Miami, can continue in the thru lanes," Joyner

Lee County manages and protects over 30,000 acres of parks, regional spaces and environmental lands. The largest individual preserves and parks in the county include: Bob Janes Preserve (5,895 acres) Located in Alva, in the northeastern corner of Lee County, Bob Janes is the largest property in the Conservation 20/20 program. Lee County and the State of Florida partnered to purchase the property in 2009 to protect critical regional wetlands and wildlife habitats. It features cypress swamps, wet prairies, creeks and approximately 10 miles of hiking trails. Larry Kiker Preserve (3,921 acres) It’s a nearly 4,000-acre protected and water management land in southeastern Lee. Formerly known as Edison Farms, Lee County purchased it for $42.2 million in 2017. In 2019, it was renamed Larry Kiker Preserve after the death of Lee County Commissioner Larry Kiker, a longtime advocate for land preservation and water quality. He was also a former mayor of Fort Myers Beach.
