MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — The man who shot and killed another man at the Original Bar in Minot last May has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Travis McDermott, Minot, was sentenced to 10 years, and ordered to serve seven, for the manslaughter charge, along with five years for the reckless endangerment charge, which will run concurrently.

According to the affidavit, McDermott and the man who he shot, Greyson Sletto, got into an argument at the bar.

During the altercation McDermott flashed a gun in his waistband. He then fell to the ground and fired two rounds at Sletto, killing him.

McDermott was found guilty on both charges in January.

Victim impact statements were heard from Sletto’s mom, and from his girlfriend, who was there the night Sletto was shot.

“No words will ever make anyone in this room truly feel the loss that Greyson’s loved ones have been feeling or the frustration we feel for someone ending Greyson’s life so selfishly and ignorantly,” said Sletto’s girlfriend, Cierra Wald. “But I know some people in this room have either been in a verbal argument with someone at a bar or know someone that has, and would never in a million years think that it would end with getting shot and killed”

McDermott is also ordered to pay $51,500 in restitution for to the Sletto family for funeral expenses and loss of labor expenses from the family’s farm that he worked on, and to have no contact with the family.

McDermott must serve 85% of his sentence and will also serve three years of supervised probation when released.

He will also receive credit for more than a year of time served.
