Stephen A. Smith Stunned by Timberwolves Playoff Collapse After Picking Team to Beat Nuggets: ‘Never Been More Embarrassed by a Prediction’

One of Stephen A. Smith’s playoff predictions has gone so wrong that he actually admitted live on First Take to being embarrassed by it.

After the Minnesota Timberwolves stunned the league by winning their first two games against the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals, it looked as though they’d pull off the upset against the reigning champions. Smith took it a step further last week and predicted that the Timberwolves would go on to win the title this year.

“I think that the Denver Nuggets are on the verge of getting swept,” Smith said when the Timberwolves held a 2-0 lead. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I’d be able to say that. I think the Denver Nuggets are on the verge of getting swept; and I believe that the Minnesota Timberwolves are gonna win the world championship.”

Since then, the Nuggets have won three straight to take a 3-2 series lead. The team is just one win away from advancing to the conference finals.

“I sit before y’all a very humbled individual,” Smith said on Tuesday’s episode of First Take . “You know, throughout the years, [ Kendrick Perkins ], I’ve made my share of predictions. I’ve been wrong sometimes. I’ve been right a hell of a lot more than I’ve been wrong; but I’ve been wrong in very conspicuous and flagrantly embarrassing fashion.

“Right now, the Minnesota Timberwolves have me looking like I have made the worst prediction in the history of my career. I’ve never been more embarrassed by a prediction that I have made than what I did when I was in South Beach last week, saying this about the Minnesota Timberwolves.”
