Meteor Bar in Minneapolis has been recognized as one of the best bars in the country thanks to an "Excellent" rating by The Pinnacle Guide.

The new guide assesses bars across eight areas of excellence: atmosphere, sustainability, hospitality, drinks, design, staff wellbeing, behind the scenes and community.

The ratings are based on three levels, from lowest to highest: Excellent, Outstanding and Exceptional.

Bars go through a self-application process and anonymous in-bar reviews.

Meteor , at 2027 N. 2nd St., was recognized for its atmosphere, hospitality, staff well-being and community.

"In a venue that’s been a bar for over 120 years, Meteor pays homage to the age-old concept of great drinks and great hospitality, showing heartfelt commitment to their community," Pinnacle said.

The international list only includes five other United States bars in the "Excellent" rating category.

"We're humbled and amazed that we were selected to be one of the first bars to receive a pin from The Pinnacle Guide," Meteor said in an Instagram post .

"It's amazing to see our little bar that we opened with a terrifying loan, all of our savings and A TON of help from friends and family be listed next to some of the most luxurious and grandiose cocktail bars in the world."

The Minneapolis spot was recently nominated for the "Best U.S. Bar Team" for the Central region's 2024 Spirited Awards. It also was nominated for a James Beard Award in January for "Outstanding Bar."

The bar was opened by Robb Jones in December 2019. According to Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine , the building has been a bar since 1901 when it was opened pre-prohibition by Minneapolis Brewing as a Grain Belt bar.

After that, it was home to Stand Up Frank's, Donny Dirk's Zombie Den and Whateversexsnuggery.

The menu features cocktails, boilermakers (shots with a beer back), classic mixed drinks, beer on tap and hot dogs. It's a popular spot with a dive-like atmosphere.
