The Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team is dealing with a lot of turnover on their roster this offseason and one of those players in danger of leaving has always been true freshman phenom , Cam Christie.

But up until Wednesday, almost all of that chatter had been centered around the likelihood of Christie declaring for the NBA Draft, a process he is already navigating currently. In most mock drafts, Cam (who’s brother Max is already in the league) is being picked in the late-1st or 2nd round.

Then, this report via Jonathan Givony (ESPN) that Christie could now be considering options outside of Dinkytown or the NBA; that he’s entered his name in the transfer portal, along with a ‘Do Not Contact” designation.

As a freshman , the Arlington Heights (IL) native averaged 11.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 30.1 minutes per night. He averaged the 2nd most points of any Gopher and was named to the Big Ten All Freshman Team.

According to Ryan James (247Sports) , Christie made this decision so he could keep all of his options open. It’s something his agent has been pushing. Now that he is in the portal, he won’t be handcuffed by the draft process.

If he opts out of the draft (which is unlikely), it isn’t Dinkytown or bust. Maybe he gets an NIL offer he can’t refuse or the Gophers lose more people to the transfer portal. Cam’s ‘Do Not Contact’ designation may speak volumes here too.

If Christie’s agent really was pushing for him to enter the portal, it would make sense that including the ‘Do Not Contact’ label ended up being the compromise. Yes, he can now legally search out other collegiate options. But that he’s not interested in other schools right now so don’t even try reaching out.

In the end, time will tell.
