Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced a murder charge against an unnamed 18-year old for his involvement in a mass shooting at a popular LGBTQ venue in August 2023.

The defendant, who was 17 at the time, is the first to be charged in connection with the deadly Nudieland shooting that claimed the life of 35-year-old August Golden and caused the injuries of six others.

Moriarity says there is at least one other person involved that has yet to be arrested.

"So right now, law enforcement partners continue to search for the other young man," Moriarty says. "He was 17 at the time, is my understanding."

Moriarity claims there is evidence of the defendants making anti-LGBTQ statements just before the shooting but that more investigation is needed to determine if this was a hate crime.

The defendant made an appearance Tuesday in juvenile court. Moriarty says its possible that both suspects will be charged as adults at a later date but that it's still being decided.

"I absolutely know that we will hold this young man, and the other young man, accountable," Moriarty explained. "But our process is to look at each and every individual as an individual, and wait until we get the certification study, the psychological reports, and talk to the people that have been harmed by this tragedy."

The suspect in custody has their next court appearance set for May 1.
