Jacobson — best in show
Onamia High School grad David Jacobson, who is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota, recently competed in a national championship speech meet as a member of the U of M Speech team. The meet, staged at the University of Michigan, featured over 50 teams from across the nation. The five-day event was the final meet of the season for the Gophers and they came away with a stellar showing which included three national champions, an individual sweepstakes placement of third, achieving the Division 2 Team Sweepstakes national title and a final ranking of seventh in the nation. David (above) took time to pose with his awards, including national championships in Prose and Impromptu Speaking. He also placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking and was a semi-finalist in Duo, Dramatic Interpretation and Rhetorical Critique and a quarter-finalist in Persuasive Speaking.

Camp Invention comes to Onamia school this summer
Abinoojiiyag Elementary School in Onamia will host Camp Invention, a summer enrichment program, from August 12-15, 2024. Sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame in collaboration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges students in grades K-6 to harness their curiosity and creativity to solve problems. The program emphasizes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning, fostering confidence, leadership, perseverance, and resourcefulness in an enjoyable environment. Campers will engage in hands-on activities inspired by renowned inventors, focusing on this year’s Illuminate curriculum. Activities include Let’s Glow, exploring the science of light; Prototyping Studio, where participants mold their ideas into inventions; In the Game, creating a light-up game board; and Operation: HydroDrop, addressing global water challenges. Parent testimonials praise Camp Invention for fostering creativity and problem-solving skills in their children. CLC alumnus wins production awards
Central Lakes College Videography alumnus Matt Hill recently won two Crystal Pillar Awards from the Upper Midwest Student Production Awards. Hill, who now works as a theatre coordinator at CLC, produced two videos that won the high awards. One video focused on Higher Learning Commission Criterion four and the other highlighted Red Sand Project, which provides awareness around the subject of missing and murdered indigenous women. Community invited to new CLC Art Gallery showcase
Community members are invited to experience the new artist showcase in the Central Lakes College Art Gallery. Artwork featured includes the ceramic work of students enrolled in the Intermediate Ceramics course, and is hosted by instructor Casey Hochhalter. Featured artists include Hope Gienger, Jacob Weber, Kate Haglin, Kathee Stanwood, Sally Aadland, Siera Turner and Tatiana Colon. Over the last four months, these artists have been studying ceramics in a more in-depth manner, becoming familiar with different clay bodies, new clay decoration techniques, manipulation of larger amounts of clay, and new glaze options. In this showcase you will see both functional ceramics like cups, mugs, bowls, and plates, as well as sculptural ceramics. The CLC Art Gallery is free and open to the public. It is located near the Brainerd campus library. The gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through May 11.
Artists consider ‘Shelter’ in new show
Ripple River Gallery kicks off the 2024 exhibit season with “Shelter,” a show featuring the work of 13 artists.
