Miami Mayor speaks out about Neosho River logjam

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. (KOAM) — The water is rising at Twin Bridges State Park where a massive logjam has formed in the past 4 days of flooding on the Neosho River.

On Tuesday the GRDA closed the boat ramp at the park. We are told on scene by employees the rising waters make it dangerous. It was also apparent the water had risen significantly in the last 24 hours.

In our live video you can tell the debris field is more dense. One bystander talking to us from SWMO on scene said it looks more compacted.

What if anything is going to be done?

"There is really not much we can do. The accountability falls on GRDA. And GRDA has never been held accountable by our state, our Governor, by our legislators, they've never been held accountable for anything they've ever done, and someone needs to hold them accountable. They are in charge of this water system. And they need to operate it as it's supposed to be."

We reached out to GRDA who provided us this statement Monday:

“We are asking the public to use precautions in the area and advising boaters to stay clear of the immediate area and be mindful that debris could move under the bridge and downstream very rapidly.”

    — GRDA

The City of Miami released a statement along with photos on Monday regarding the logjam:

"At this time the City of Miami is not aware of any plans by ODOT, BNSF or GRDA to attempt to remove the debris, and there are no plans to close the bridge to traffic at this time. Officials tell us ODOT (Oklahoma Department of Transportation), BNSF railroad which has a bridge downstream toward the lake nearby, nor GRDA have responded with any plans to remove the debris."

It should be noted in January of this year the City of Miami won a years-long lawsuit against the GRDA for extensive flooding in the city of Miami. The city said GRDA failed to control the flood waters and then the properties that were continually flooded (which included some city properties) the GRDA didn't fulfill their obligation to purchase those properties from the owners. There is a civil lawsuit also underway with 450+ property owners seeking compensation from GRDA .
