Eight Mexia tracksters qualify for regional meet

Seven Blackcats and one Ladycat qualified for the Region III-3A track meet with their performances at the area meet at Mc-Gregor on Friday, April 12.

The regional meet will be Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, at Waco Midway.

The top four finishers in each event at the area meet moved on to the regional meet. The top two in each event at the regional meet qualify for the UIL State Track & Field Championships scheduled for Thursday, May 2, at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.

Draylon Lee qualified in three events for the Blackcats.

The senior finished second in the 200-meter dash and triple jump and helped the 4x200 relay team to a runner-up finish. The rest of the relay team was made up of Keison Hukcaby, Brice Moore and Jacques Cooper.

Huckaby also qualified in the 100-meter dash with a second-place finish.

Kyran Bedford won the 110-meter hurdles event. Caden Grayson was third in the shot put and Micah Kirven finished fourth in the long jump.

On the girls’ side, Triniti Reagor qualified in the sprints with a second-place finish in the 200 and a third-place showing in the 100.

Bedford raced to victory in 15.52 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. He edged runner-up Keith Wolridge of Lexington High School by three one-hundredths of a second, Bedford nearly qualified in the long jump, but finished fifth wth an effort of 21 feet even, six inches out of fourth place.

Lee once again burned up the track with a time of 23.23 seconds in the 200-meter dash. He trailed only Mason Biehle of Lexington High School, who won the event in 22.86 seconds. He edged Teague’s Jehmel Rice, who finished third in 23.29 seconds.

Lee also was one-fourth of Mexia’s 4x200 relay team, which finished second in 1 minute, 31.17 seconds. They trailed only race winner Franklin, which was clocked in 1:29.15.

In the triple jump, Lee soared 44 feet, 9 3/4 inches. He trailed only Teague’s J’kybryen Harris, who won the event with an effort of 45 feet, 3/4 of an inch. Rice of Teague was third with a leap of 43-9 3/4, a foot behind Lee.

Huckaby scorched the track in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.29 seconds. He was behind only Groesbeck’s Jordan Smith, who won the event in 11.15 seconds. Huckaby edged out Kemauri Evans of Teague, who was just one one-hundredth of a second behind him in third place in 11.30 seconds.

Grayson finished third in the shot put with a toss of 45-9 1/2.

Kirven’s fourth-place leap in the long jump was 21-6. He was just two inches behind third-place finisher Dalton Walker of Elkhart.

For the Ladycats, Reagor continued to shine in the sprints. She was second in the 200 in 26.73 seconds. She trailed oinly race winner Akayliana Wade of Franklin, who was timed in 25.78 seconds.

Reagor’s third-place time in the 100-meter dash was 12.5 seconds.

A few runners competed but did not qualify for the regional meet.

The boys 4x100 relay team finished fifth in 43.63 seconds. They missed qualifying by three one-hundredths of a second. Cameron Yoe got the fourth and final qualifying spot in a time of 43.60 seconds.

The 4x400 relay finished seventh in 3:38.09.

Zhayden Jackson was seventh in the 400-meter dash in 52.75 seconds.

For the girls, the 4x100 reley team was seventh in 51.91 seconds.
