METAIRIE, La. ( WGNO ) — A new transit bus facility is opening on the East Bank of Jefferson Parish.
On Thursday, May 16, officials with Jefferson Parish Transit will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new location of the Jefferson Parish Transit East Bank Operations building and refurbished maintenance facility.
JP Transit officials say it’s the only agency in Louisiana to receive buses and bus facilities competitive grant funding from the United States Department of Transportation with the Federal Transit Administration in 2022.
The project’s construction began on Nov. 1, 2022, with the demolition of the existing Transit Administration building. It was completed on April 4 with the construction of a new two-story 15,000-square-foot building.
According to JP Transit authorities, the project cost a total of $8,959,000.
The building consists of a transit dispatcher’s office with a glass view to monitor bus yard operations. Additionally, there are perimeter fencing, showers, locker rooms, lounge area, operator computer room, operator quiet room, kitchen, Jefferson Parish offices, FTA Grant office, copy room, training classroom, conference room, file room, emergency powered generator and a Paratransit reservation and call center.
JP Transit officials add that the existing building was refurbished with new interior painting, replacement of exterior overhead doors with power-operated garage doors, new automatic switch generator, new thermal insulation throughout the facility, new employee lounge area, new epoxy flooring throughout, new LED lighting, new AC and heating system, new materials lift mezzanine, a bus battery charging room and two new bus fuel pumping stations.
The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. at 118 David Drive in Metairie.
