Southern Tier trails are a gem. Summit aims to take them to next level

A day-long Southern Tier Greenways Planning Summit, hosted by Parks & Trails New York, took stock of the greenway trail plans already in motion across the region and tackled what it will take to link them into a connected regional network. The event, held Nov. 5 at the Corning Museum of Glass, focused on the eight-county Southern Tier Regional Economic Development region, which includes Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, Chenango and Delaware counties. The event paired project updates from local and regional partners with hands-on working sessions on the challenges and opportunities ahead. Kamala Keeley, President of Three Rivers Development Corporation, said trails, waterways and parks aren't amenities on the side; they're part of what makes a region a place people choose to build a life. “When our employers recruit engineers, nurses, and skilled trades, candidates want to know what life looks like outside of work," Keeley said. "Every connected mile of trail strengthens our answer, and it helps us keep the talented people who are already here.” Keeley said the Southern Tier is losing population, particularly residents who are between 25 and 44 years old.
