The Grinch plays virtual golf, other games in Ashland
The Grinch traded his plans to ruin Christmas for a round of virtual golf with Chequamegon Bay Area children Dec. 14 at The Local Bar & Grille in Ashland. The green grouch from Dr. Seuss’s classic tale spent the afternoon at the restaurant’s new Axes and Irons entertainment area, where he played virtual golf and tic-tac-toe with several children — though he stayed true to character by frequently trying to distract his smaller opponents during their turns. The Local recently installed a virtual golf simulator that can accommodate several variations of the sport and withstand impacts from golf balls, soccer balls, and footballs, said restaurant owner Natalie Skinnes. “It doesn’t damage it at all. It’s made to be hit,” she said. The restaurant also added an axe-throwing area next to the simulator, where patrons can test their aim by hurling axes at distant targets. Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 9, 2026
This week we had some warmer temps and some rain last night. The good news is that most grooming will resume over the weekend now that temperatures will drop again. We had a great start to the season with quality snow, so we have a good base to work with despite the warmer conditions. While the trails got soft this week and did take a bit of a hit, the overall reports from riders are the trails are still good especially to the north. Trails in the woods have been most protected and the groomers deciding to stay off until it freezes was helpful. The county and town roads have had maintenance this week after the holiday so they have scraped them down so if you are on a section of road to get from point A to point B do stay far to the right and try to catch some of that snow on the edge. Trails that run parallel with highways are also mostly still snow covered but dirty with the road clean up and some berms to the side from the plow spray, groomers will clean that up as they go out. Groomers will also pull that side snow in and fill where they can. Lakes are fairly smooth but have some of that crunchy surfaces, so ride carefully not to hit a hard drift. If you are doing a lot of lake riding, especially without scratchers be sure to find loose snow to keep your machine cool.

North End Snowshoe Classic Set to Go on January 3
The North End Ski Club in Cable will present the 7th annual North End Snowshoe Classic on Saturday, January 3, 2026. After two years of very challenging conditions, when the Snowshoe Classic was held as a trail run in 2024 and cancelled in 2025, the 2026 event will be held on its full course on snow. The area has been graced by plentiful, early snow, which brought with it another set up challenges in the form of heavily snow laden trees obscuring the trails. All trails have been cleared and are in excellent condition for this year’s Snowshoe Classic.
