The Northland College 2023-24 mens and womens sports programs came through with a hefty cumulative grade point average of 3.25/4.0, and it was the smart performance of the LumberJills volleyball team leading the way with a mark of 3.71. U.S. Forest Service prescribes burn to promote growth in Chequamegon Nicolai National Forest
IRON RIVER, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Residents near Iron River, Wis. may have seen some extra smoke in the sky the past few days but the fires that caused it were planned. U.S. Forest Service crews lit a prescribed burn on 900 acres of the Chequamegon Nicolai National Forest on Monday. It was the area’s second-ever prescribed burn.
Local 4-H member receives scholarship
The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation announced Thursday its scholarship recipients. The sole Bay Area 4-H member to receive a scholarship was Washburn’s Brian Maki. He is the recipient of the Harold and Irene Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship. Maki was one of three 4-H members to be awarded the $2,500 scholarship. The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation awards scholarships annually to Wisconsin students pursuing higher education. Scholarship recipients are selected based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals. This year over $20,000 in scholarships were awarded, according to a news release.

A Bad River Tribal member is seeking retribution for damages to his drone that was shot down two years ago. Joe Bates was flying his drone over Scott Bretting’s property in September 2022 to investigate and record video of what he believed was illegal working being done on Bretting’s property.
