How First Avenue Became a Vital Independent Concert Promoter
This spring, First Avenue will celebrate its 56th anniversary. The old bus depot, with its Mainroom and complementary 7th St Entry, where everybody from Prince to The Replacements got their start, is actually more vibrant than ever—a consistent nexus of energy in a downtown that desperately needs it. And since Dayna Frank took the reins from her father, Byron, in 2009, First Ave has become the headquarters for a local conglomerate of independently run venues, which includes the Fine Line in Minneapolis and the Turf Club, the Palace, and The Fitzgerald in St. Paul. First Avenue Productions promotes even bigger shows as far afield as the Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth. And in 2027, First Avenue will operate a gorgeous 8,000-cap amphitheater on the Upper Harbor Terminal on the Mississippi.
