321preps Notebook: Astronaut, Melbourne high school sports notes

Astronaut High athletic director Cheryl Shivel has announced she will retire at the end of the school year.

Athletic director since 2011, she was previously assistant A.D. and a math teacher. She was the first woman to serve as A.D. for the War Eagles and is currently one of just two women in the role in Brevard County. The Titusville High graduate served two terms on the FHSAA Section 2 Appeals Committee and is the secretary for the Cape Coast Conference.

Melbourne High rowing adds more wins

At the Sarasota Nathan Benderson Park on Sunday, two Melbourne High rowing teams won the scholastic trophy for the highest-placing school team at the FSRA Sweeping Championship.

The squad placed second in the boys lightweight 8 with the team of Owen King, Jaden Harrison, Nick Horn, Ryan Erickson, Liam Porter, Daniel Johnson, Braden Mammay, Will Kerschensteiner and coxswains Elle Curtis and Taylor Warthen.

Melbuorne's boys second varsity 4 was fourth in its race with the team of Jonas Feldmeier, Dimitri Sizinski, Cameron Laplante, Keegan Frye and Curtis.
