Downtown Newport receives grant to help with historic building facades

NASHVILLE — More than $3.9 million in Rural Economic Opportunity funding is being awarded to improve structures in Tennessee Downtown and Main Street communities. Among those grant recipients is Newport, which will receive $245,511. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Deputy Gov. and Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter announced the 14 grant recipients. “Our rural communities are the backbone of our economy, and I’m proud to take part in announcing these grants. I’m grateful for local leaders who care deeply about their communities and look forward to seeing the investments they make to ensure all of Tennessee can flourish,” said Gov. Lee. Grants were awarded to organizations that illustrated the need for improvements and the ability to execute an effective design plan for building facades, wayfinding signage, gateways and streetscapes. As part of the program, each new grant recipient will be required to match 25% of the funding received for the project. “I am very excited about the opportunities that these grant funds can provide for historic downtown buildings to get upgrades,” Newport Main Street Director Monica Hommel. “We have seen so much progress downtown, and this will help us take a step farther in

Third Annual Boo Bash brings thousands to downtown

NEWPORT — The third annual downtown Boo Bash was a success last Tuesday evening, and as many as 8,000 people were believed to have been in attendance. According to Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball, there were 45 or 46 booths on the courthouse side, and that does not include some booths that other businesses had set up in front of their shops. “We are very pleased with the turnout. Everyone was very happy, and we have gotten lots of great comments,” he said. Ball said he wanted to start Boo Bash when he was first elected sheriff in 2022, but they didn’t get the annual event underway until 2024. “It has grown every year. We have more and more people and more businesses and organizations participating,” he said. The event is not scheduled for Halloween night because he said he does not want it to compete with other activities and events scheduled throughout the community. He explained that they try to count the children in attendance and then add in adults who accompany each child. “Mark your calendars for next year as the date is set, Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2027, starting at 5 p.m.,” Ball said. “We would like to

Greeneville-Greene County Humane Society Dog of the Week: Bonbon

Halloween is here! The night when skeletons, ghosties, werewolves, and witches rule. Where spooky things happen under a full moon. But what if you are scared of Halloween? What if the creeps really do creep you out? Then shy little Bonbon is just the doggie for you!! Bonbon is all meaty treats and no tricks. Unless there is a snack involved, then she’ll do any trick. “Pass one more over, please! Don’t look at me!” she’d say between munches. Once, while hiding from trick-or-treaters, Bonbon ran into a pack of werewolves who were up to Halloween mischief. They invited Bonbon to run with them in the woods, and while Bonbon liked all the running, she’d rather snack than scare. “Umm, guys, it’s a little dark out here!” she said while running out of the woods. Scary movies are also a no-go for this sweet girl. Whenever one is on, she covers her eyes with her very furry paw and cuddles in close. And maybe sneaks a piece of candy or two, or three, or four. “I don’t want to be scared! I want to be loved,” Bonbon said with a jump. Last Halloween, Bonbon ran into a skeleton while she

Rogersville's Veterans Parade coming up next week

The latest installment of Rogersville’s year-long celebration of America 250 is coming up Saturday, Nov. 7, when the town will host a Veterans Parade along Main Street downtown. The event aspires to bring veterans, families and community members together for a day of patriotism, remembrance, and gratitude. The parade was announced in late summer, and planning has been ongoing for a few months now. The first evidence of the big day will take place Saturday, following the town’s annual Trunk or Treat celebration for Halloween. “The banners will go up Saturday night, right after Trunk or Treat,” said event coordinator Beth Metz, referring to the veteran recognition banners that have been offered throughout September and October for family and friends of local veterans to recognize them for their service. These personalized banners will be displayed on Main Street throughout the month of November. They each feature one veteran and may be kept by the sponsor following the display. The parade will take place at 11 a.m., beginning at East Rogersville Baptist Church and travel west on Main Street to First Baptist Church of Rogersville. Parade lineup will begin at 10 in the parking lots in front of the church. The
