CHISHOLM, Minn. (Northern News Now) - After almost 40 years, a man convicted of raping and killing a woman in Chisholm is heading back to trial. Michael Allen Carbo Jr., 56, of Hibbing was sentenced in September 2022 after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder for the 1986 slaying of 38-year-old Nancy Daughtery of Chisholm.

Retirees attend annual firefighter banquet
The Chisholm Volunteer Fire Department held its annual banquet on April 27 at Valentini’s Supper Club in Chisholm. Retirees in the photo represent seven decades of service, spanning from the 1950s through 2020, according to Fire Chief Chris Masucci. There were about 60 attendees at this year’s banquet, including current members of the fire department, and significant others. Hibbing, Minn.- The City of Hibbing is hosting a tax referendum open house next week. Next Tuesday, May 14, the community is invited to the Hibbing Fire Department building to learn more about the November sales tax referendum. The open house begins at 5 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. If the referendum is approved a half-perfect sales tax increase would be used to fund a roughly $20 million project. The money is for the proposed plan for a new regional public safety center. The plan brings together all first responder departments under one roof.
