ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Department of Housing and Community Development today announced Maryland’s nomination of 114 census tracts as Opportunity Zones under the federal Opportunity Zone program, which provides tax benefits to incentivize high-impact investments in low-income communities. Counties across Maryland submitted nominations of individual census tracts to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The department then worked with local officials, business owners, investors, and community development experts to evaluate the proposed areas and identify where Opportunity Zone designations would have the greatest benefit to their communities. Last month, the department submitted the state’s approved and recommended census tracts to the United States Department of the Treasury. On November 5, the U.S. Treasury released the official 2.0 designations.

On November 4, a vaping device containing THC was recovered from a 14-year-old student at Davis Middle School. The election has come and gone – citizens cast their votes, nearly all ballots have been counted and winners and losers have acknowledged who will be making decisions at the public level for the next several years. Southern Maryland News editorial staff worked tirelessly in the months leading up to Tuesday's election to provide information to voters about local candidates, from commissioners and school boards to state delegates and senators, in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties. On Election Day, our staff writers were out talking to voters, taking pictures and capturing the general mood of the day.
