Rome plans safety improvements near Cedar Avenue, East 20th Street
Rome officials plan to install crosshatched pavement striping near the intersection of Cedar Avenue and East 20th Street but are not recommending a new crosswalk there. East Rome Baptist Church requested the crosswalk in July after church representatives said some members had nearly been hit by speeding drivers while trying to cross the street. Rome Design Engineer Felipe Arevalo presented an evaluation of the intersection during the Sept. 9 Traffic Commission meeting. Arevalo said the intersection was reviewed for both a possible crosswalk and a four-way stop. Traffic data showed speeds somewhat above the posted 35 mph limit, but there had been no pedestrian-related crashes at the intersection during the past five years. Based on that information, Arevalo recommended against installing a crosswalk. “Crosswalks tend to create a false sense of security,” Arevalo said. Instead, Arevalo proposed several other improvements aimed at making pedestrians and traffic more visible. An existing pedestrian warning sign near the intersection is about 4 feet high and would be raised to about 7 feet and replaced with a more visible yellow-green sign. Arevalo also recommended moving a speed limit sign farther back and relocating the pedestrian warning sign closer to the intersection. The city will

Rome Transit eyes 2027 microtransit pilot amid lower federal allocation
Rome officials approved grant applications seeking $1.67 million in federal funding for Rome Transit as the department plans a possible microtransit pilot in 2027. The Rome City Commission approved the applications last week, with the new amount a decrease from the $2.1 million request last year. “The state decides what amount we get based off of the size of our population, our ridership and things like that,” Transit Director Courtnay Griffin said. “And so, that number always looks different and it is predetermined for us.” The operating grant request is for $1.35 million in federal funding and requires an equal $1.35 million local match. The capital grant request for $320,000 in federal funds also would net $40,000 from the state and a $40,000 local match. While the overall federal request is lower than last year, the amount being sought for operations has increased from about $1.3 million last year. Griffin said most of that is due to a rise in employee costs, including insurance, wages and a 2% cost-of-living adjustment. Part of the increase also gives the department flexibility to implement a microtransit program. “We wanted to save a little room in there because we’re thinking that we may need

Rome adds safety improvements at Branham, Grover intersection
Rome officials are moving ahead with some safety improvements at the intersection of Branham Avenue and Grover Street while continuing to study whether additional changes are needed. The discussion comes about a month after a fatal motorcycle crash at the South Rome intersection near Lovejoy Baptist Church. The city received a community petition asking officials to examine the intersection. Felipe Arevalo, a Rome design engineer, presented an analysis of the intersection during the Sept. 9 traffic commission meeting, including whether there should be a four-way stop. No, said Arevalo, because traffic volume at the intersection falls well below the threshold used to warrant one. “In a major road, you need at least 300 cars per hour (for a stop sign), and the daily traffic (on Branham) is 420, so it’s really low,” Arevalo said. Committee members discussed whether a four-way stop could be installed despite the recommendation, but Chris Jenkins, director of public works, cautioned against it, using Summerville Park as an example. “When you did that, then the next road over in Summerville Park said, ‘Hey, can we not have a four-way stop? Y’all did it over here,’ so we did it again over there,” Jenkins said. “So now
