Minnesota’s last Big Woods forest hides glacial lakes and rare turtles
Lake Maria State Park sits about an hour northwest of Minneapolis, near Monticello, and it feels like you drove back in time. The park covers nearly 1,600 acres of rolling, wooded land that protects one of the few remaining stands of Minnesota’s old Big Woods, a dense forest of maple, oak and basswood that once spread across much of the southern half of the state.

This Minnesota Zoo Lets You See Polar Bears, Gorillas, and a Giant Glass Conservatory for Free
Most zoos ask for a ticket before the first giraffe comes into view. One spot in St. Paul flips that script and lets everyone in, with only a suggested donation at the door. Inside, a polar bear plays with a big blue barrel, sea lions put on a show, and a glass conservatory holds plants from around the world. There is even a bonsai room and a Japanese garden tucked into the mix.

People Drive Hours For The Reuben At This Unassuming Small-Town Minnesota Diner
Some road trips start with a museum or a lake. This one starts with a sandwich craving and a train car that has been parked in downtown St. Paul since the 1930s. Food-focused day-trippers from across Minnesota keep pointing their cars toward the capital city for griddle classics made on a single flat top, a few feet from the counter stools. The building was made in New Jersey and shipped west, and it has since shown up in movies and TV shows.
