Accused Gilgo Beach killer’s home being part of new search is ‘like post-traumatic stress’ for Rex Heuermann’s family: lawyer

This week’s new police search of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann’s home on Long Island caught his family by surprise — and felt “like post-traumatic stress,” their lawyer said.

“It’s stressful,” Bob Macedonio, who represents Heuermann’s wife and children, said outside the Massapequa Park home as cops scoured the disheveled house for a third straight day Wednesday.

“Their lives have been turned upside down, destroyed,” Macedonio said. “Their personal property has been taken, obviously for legal purposes. But they don’t understand that. They don’t comprehend that. This is something well beyond their comprehension.

“This is again, a complete shock,” he added.

It was the second time in less than a year that cops scoured the accused serial killer’s home — with investigators spending 13 days there last year .

The first search followed Heuermann’s arrest on murder charges last year linking him to the bodies of sex workers whose remains were found dumped along Ocean Parkway more than a decade ago.

The suspect, an architect with offices in Midtown, is accused of killing four women who were among 11 bodies found dumped at and near Gilgo Beach between 2010 and 2011.

Macedonio, who represents Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, arrived at the family house on Wednesday afternoon with the couple’s daughter to retrieve her car from across the street.

Sources told The Post this week that investigators are trying to find a link between Heuermann and body parts possibly belonging to other victims.

Other law enforcement sources said Suffolk County prosecutors are simply looking for more evidence in the case against Heuermann, calling the current case largely circumstantial.

The accused killer has been held without bail since his arrest, and now faces charges in the deaths of four women who worked as prostitutes — Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Nicole Brainard-Smith, 24, and Megan Waterman, 22.

His daughter, Victoria Heuerman, 27, was home when Suffolk County cops and state troopers arrived at the door shortly after 8 a.m. Monday armed with a new search warrant, the lawyer said.

“They knocked on the door. Everything was peaceful,” Macedonio said. “She let them in. No resistance. Fully cooperative with everything. They asked her to leave so they could execute the search warrant.

“We had her taken to a location that was safe for her and we returned to pick up the car today.”

Ellerup and her son, Christopher Sheridan, were visiting South Carolina, where they own property.

Macedonio said he has not been shown a copy of the search warrant.

He said he was surprised “because it was such an extensive search that was conducted 10 months ago.

“I can’t imagine what was missed or left behind,” he said.

Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office are not providing details of the new search nor specify what it is that investigators are now looking for.
