Elder Services opens Café Saborosa at Mashpee Senior Center

Caribbean, Cape Verdean and Portuguese cuisine are coming to the Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands’ senior social dining.

Café Saborosa opens on May 6 inside the Mashpee Senior Center . Each Monday, Elder Services will run the café serving up dishes from the Caribbean menu created by their partners City Fresh Foods , according to a press release.

“The goal of the Café is to encourage more people to try Senior Social Dining,” Sarah Franey, community services officer at Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, said in the press release.

Jazz vocalist Candida Rose will be singing at the café's grand opening.

Elder Services’ senior social dining program serves free meals to seniors 60 and older from five locations in Barnstable, Brewster, Mashpee, Yarmouth and on Nantucket. Meals are free of charge but reservations are required in advance. Seniors who are able sometimes contribute $4 for the meal, said Louis Eppers, nutrition director for the Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.

Because of a shift in demographics, Eppers said, the Meals on Wheels program started serving home meals with Caribbean flavors a year ago. Because it was well received, it will be served every Monday at the Mashpee Senior Dining site.
