Dr. Jeff “Cog” Coggins will speak about drones ay 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Blount County Public Library. He will focus on how to earn the FAA Part 107 license and potential career opportunities using drones.

In order to fly an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) such as a drone, the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Small UAS Rule (Part 107) states that the pilot must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. This certificate demonstrates that the pilot understands the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones.

Dr. Coggin is currently the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor for the Heritage High School Air Force JROTC Program. In this position, Dr. Coggin is responsible for developing citizens of character dedicated to serving their country and community. Dr. Coggin also serves on the Heritage High Professional Development and Leadership teams. He has nearly 25 years of active duty service in both the United States Air Force and the Mississippi Air National Guard.

Open to the public, this program is hosted by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
