EUGENE, Ore. — A Eugene man has a larger than life hobby growing giant pumpkins. We visited Russ Pugh's property to see just how heavy the fruit of his labor was this year. "You know, I've been doing this competitively for 25 years," Pugh says, "and when, I think I was eight years old, I grew up in Kansas and I went to the Kansas State Fair and I saw what I thought was the world's biggest pumpkin. Now looking back at it, it probably weighed maybe 300 pounds. But ever since then, I've wanted to grow a giant pumpkin."

Owner of famed Oregon outdoor shop talks struggles, ways to survive
It’s been a difficult few years for Oregon outdoors shops. The rise of online shopping, inflation, insurance costs and other factors have made once ubiquitous gear shops an endangered species. In just the last few years, Salem Summit Company , Santiam Bicycle , Andy and Bax Outdoor Store and others have closed, while others, like Next Adventure in Portland, have struggled to hang on. Larry Desaulniers knows about the struggles firsthand. The longtime owner of Peak Sports in Corvallis made the difficult decision to downsize his shop last year — and drop programs like bike repair and ski rentals. Desaulniers joined the Explore Oregon Podcast to explain his decision and why it’s such a struggle for outdoor retail in 2026. This interview has been trimmed and edited. The full episode can be found anywhere you get podcasts or at statesmanjournal.com/outdoors/explore Makenzie Stamets: To start out, can you tell us a little bit about the history of Peak Sports? Larry Desaulniers: The store was founded in 1971 by Jeff Katz. He started it as a bike shop and a little hole in the wall. He quickly moved into outdoor goods, both because they're fun, but also bike shops in the winter
