Sentara midwives meet growing demand for low-intervention births

Two years into her career as a labor and delivery nurse, around 1987, Elizabeth Uzzle witnessed something that left her awestruck. She watched a physician deliver a baby so calmly that it brought her to tears. When she asked the doctor his secret, his answer was simple: He had been trained by midwives. “I decided I must know this midwife thing,” said Uzzle, who now has 34 years of experience as a nurse-midwife and is one of three certified nurse-midwives at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City. “[Witnessing that birth] I couldn’t even function. I was crying. Never had I seen a delivery with no one yelling, no one screaming — [just] a gentle birth. It was beautiful.” SAMC has continued to expand its midwifery services since launching the program in 2024, and a fourth midwife is expected to join the team. On Oct. 15, the hospital invited the public to meet the midwives, whose work reflects a growing demand for personalized, holistic maternity care. Certified nurse-midwives are advanced practice nurses who provide women’s health care ranging from pregnancy to childbirth to postpartum care. They specialize in low-risk pregnancies and births and refer patients to a physician when complications

Council tables costly firefighter schedule change

A growing trend among regional fire departments to shorten firefighters’ workweeks by restructuring shifts has Elizabeth City Fire Chief Chris Carver concerned. Fire departments in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Greenville and other area cities have moved to a 24/72 schedule, or 24 hours on duty followed by 72 hours off, according to Carver. The change would reduce the average firefighter’s workweek from 56 hours to 42 by moving from three shifts to four. If Elizabeth City doesn’t adopt a similar schedule, Carver worries a department already struggling with recruitment and retention could lose more firefighters over time. Making the switch, however, would take several years and cost the city more than $1 million. Several Elizabeth City Council members said that money may not be available, given the city is also considering a new $12 million fire station. Carver pitched the plan to the council during an Oct. 26 work session. He acknowledged it was a “big ask” but said a number of firefighters had asked him to bring it to the city for preliminary consideration. “My guys asked me to bring this to your attention,” he said. “Their concern, along with mine, is recruitment and retention. It’s already hard out there

Voters return Corprew, Nelson, Ward; approve ABC store, mixed drinks

All three Republican county commissioners whose seats were on the ballot won new terms Tuesday, according to unofficial results. Tim Corprew led the field with 2,326 votes, or 52% of the 4,452 votes cast. Wallace Nelson received 1,104 votes (25%), and James Ward received 1,022 (23%). Corprew collected 1,474 of his votes during early voting, which ran from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31. Nelson received 746 early votes, and Ward received 642. In other races, Sheriff Shelby White was reelected without opposition to another four-year term. White ran as a Democrat in 2018, when he defeated Republican Jim Bray, and again in 2022. He has since switched parties and ran as a Republican on Tuesday. Clerk of Superior Court Todd Tilley also ran unopposed for another four-year term. Tilley ran unopposed as a Democrat in 2018 and 2022 before running as a Republican this year. Voters also overwhelmingly approved two local referendums. The first authorizes the county to establish an ABC board and operate an ABC store. The Town of Hertford already has both. The measure passed 4,250 to 1,200. The second allows the sale of mixed drinks, or liquor by the drink, at restaurants, private clubs and other qualified

After reviewing head-to-head results and, where necessary, sets lost and total points scored, Fayetteville State was awarded the CIAA regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Virginia State followed as No. 2 and Livingstone rounded out the top three seeds. The Vikings will open the tournament at 11 a.m. Monday against No. 5 Winston-Salem State, who ECSU split a pair of wins with earlier this season.
