Night driving restrictions on oceanside beaches within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore begin on Wednesday, May 1, at 9:00 p.m. From May 1 through July 31, priority off-road vehicle (ORV) ramps close at 9:00 p.m. and will reopen the following morning at 6:00 a.m. All other designated oceanside ORV ramps close at 9:00 p.m. and reopen at 7:00 a.m.

Annual Buxton and Ocracoke Ceremonies to honor WWII sailors will be held on May 9 and May 10
Two annual ceremonies are returning in 2024 to honor the World War II British and Canadian sailors who lost their lives off the Outer Banks 82 years ago. In mid-May, representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Navy, British Royal Navy, and National Park Service will come together at the British cemeteries on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands to honor the 63 foreign sailors who perished while protecting our coast.

North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality demands action on Buxton Beach issues
On April 17, 2024, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) sent letters to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Navy, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) demanding immediate action to remediate the environmental and public safety issues that have plagued a 500-yard section of Buxton Beach since September 2023.

Cape Point Campground opens for the 2024 season
The Cape Point Campground in Buxton opened for the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, per a recent announcement from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS). The CHNS’ other seasonal campground – the Frisco Campground – opened on March 30, however, the Cape Point Campground’s opening was delayed due to excessive rainfall-related flooding in the area.
