A 3.0-magnitude earthquake rattled Mansfield, Texas , as another 3.9-magnitude quake rocked regions of southeast New Mexico and western Texas on Wednesday, putting the entire Southwest on alert.

At least 10 individuals in the Mansfield area reported the quake to the U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors seismic activity across the country. The shaking from the quake was reportedly "light," with no damage expected from the earthquake. The one in New Mexico was slightly stronger, described as "moderate" with a chance of "very light damage."

The Mansfield quake was rated a VI on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, while the New Mexico quake, which originated from Jal, a tiny city right in the southeast corner of the state, was rated a V. Mansfield is located just south of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, on the other side of the state from where the impacts of the New Mexico quake were felt.

According to the Texas Almanac , which has compiled data on weather events in the state since the early 1900s, including earthquakes, there were exactly 12 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher between the years of 1923 and 2020.

According to data compiled by the U.S Geological Survey, there have reportedly been at least an additional 13 since then of that magnitude, with the most recent being in mid-February in Karnes County, where a magnitude 4.7 earthquake was recorded.

The rare earthquakes on Wednesday came just a couple of months after a 4.8-magnitude quake and its aftershocks rocked New Jersey and other parts of the East Coast.
