NEW YORK (PIX11) – Police are searching for a man who raped a woman in Manhattan on Sunday, according to the NYPD.

The suspect grabbed the 23-year-old woman inside the stairwell of an apartment building and said, “If you scream, I’ll shoot you,” police sources told PIX11 News. He placed her in a chokehold and raped her, police said.

Police initially said the suspect followed the woman into the residential building near Thompson and Prince streets around 4:10 a.m. Sources later told PIX11 News that the victim was walking upstairs to the second floor while the suspect was walking downstairs from the third floor when the attack happened, sources told PIX11 News.

Police say the suspect walked past the victim at first but then doubled back.

The man fled the location going southbound on Thompson Street. EMS responded and transported the victim to a local hospital for medical evaluation, according to authorities.

The suspect was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with red lettering that forms a heart shape, gray pants with stripes and orange sneakers. Police released photos of the suspect early Monday morning.
