MADISON, Wis. -- The UW-Madison Police Department said Wednesday that it is investigating three incidents that reportedly occurred on Library Mall over the past week.

The first incident occurred on May 1. A student holding a pro-Israel sign reported being approached by a man with a knife attached to his waistband. The man allegedly told her "Jews shouldn't be on campus."

Officials said the incident was not reported to UWPD until Wednesday and it is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

The second incident occurred at around 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday. A student reported that a man approached him on Library Mall and threatened to kill him if he didn't put away his phone. The student walked away, but the man allegedly followed him for a short time afterward and continued to threaten him.

The third incident occurred at around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday. UWPD said somebody was assaulted with a large stick during a fight between two people. The fight had stopped before officers arrived on scene.

Anyone with knowledge of the three incidents is urged to contact UWPD at (608) 264-2677 or send tips through the BadgerSAFE app.
