The Hawks had dropped their first game of the tournament to Castlewood and were aiming to make a run in the consolation bracket. After losing the first two sets to Faulkton Area in a consolation semifinal, the Hawks stormed back to force a fifth set. But C-E was down 14-10 and some fans were bracing for the end.

High School Basketball Season Getting Underway
Just days after the end of the volleyball season, girls basketball practice is underway throughout the state. Monday marked the first allowable day for practice in all three classes of girls basketball. The first games of the year for area teams will be December 1st, with the ORR girls taking on Great Plains Lutheran. Howard’s first game will be December 6th. Chester and Madison open their seasons on December 7th.

Flying to the top: Chester crowned state volleyball champions
After falling to the Warner Monarchs in the 2022 volleyball state championships, the Chester Flyers burned with the desire to get back to that stage. After losing only two games through the regular season, the Flyers fought their way to the No. 2 position in the state. They secured a spot in the SoDak 16 and then the state tournament.
Community Center to Launch New Youth Basketball League
A new basketball league will tip off in Madison in the New Year. The Madison Community Center will be hosting a youth basketball league for boys and girls in grades 3 through 6. Samantha Tighe, recreation coordinator for the Community Center says they’ve been looking for ways to better utilize the facilities in town.

The Michael J. Entringer Scholarship Classic is a boys and girls basketball classic on Dec. 16 and Dec. 30 in Colman and Brookings. The classic is remembrance of basketball and football official Mike Entringer, who passed away in 1990. The funds raised from these classics are used to reward student-athletes with scholarships.
