LUCAMA——The town board of commissioners unanimously agreed to allow deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office to continue using office space at the Lucama Town Hall.
Sheriff Calvin L. Woodard Jr., informed the town on Dec. 28 that the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office would not renew its contract with the town for directed patrols as of June 30. Deputies will still respond to calls for service in Lucama, but will not have a constant presence in the town since the town declined to pay for the purchase of a requested $48,000 new patrol cruiser and the new annual contract amount of $237,519.
Interim Town Administrator Ralph Clark said that he had spoken with WCSO Chief of Staff Wanda Samuel.
“I have asked Chief Samuel what is coming June 30 and what can we expect and she responded to us,” Clark said. “One of the things we have talked about all along is the continual use of the office space they have here in the building.”
WCSO deputies routinely use a small office space that is located within the Lucama Town Hall building.
“We think that it is a very positive thing to have that presence here,” Clark said.
Clark asked the board of commissioners to concur with the Sheriff’s request to make the office space available for his use.
Commissioner Jody Teague made a motion which was seconded by Commissioner Kim Joyner. The vote was unanimous to provide space for the Sheriff’s office.
