Kalskag remains on flood advisory, with ice jammed below the community
Ice on the Kuskokwim River at Kalskag's airstrip on May 3, 2024. High water can be seen on the road. As of noon on Saturday (May 4), Upper and Lower Kalskag residents reported a rapid rise in water as ice started moving in front of town. According to one resident, water was about a foot below the power plant, but as of 12:00 p.m., power was still on in both Upper and Lower Kalskag.
Tuluksak and Akiak under flood advisory, lower Kuskokwim communities under flood watch
The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Tuluksak and Akiak and canceled the flood advisory for Kalskag as the breakup front moves downriver. As of Sunday morning (May 5), officials said they plan to issue a flood watch for Kwethluk, Akiachak and Bethel in anticipation of the continued slow march of breakup and potential ice jams as the front hits the sturdier ice below Bethel.

NWS issues flood watch for Kwethluk, with ice still jammed below Kalskag
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the area around Kwethluk, in effect through Tuesday afternoon. When the ice jam in the Kalskag area breaks, a pulse of water will flow downstream, and National Weather Service Hydrologist Johnse Ostman says it could impact communities downstream of Kalskag, including Tuluksak, Akiak, Akiachak and Kwethluk.
Aniak placed on flood watch as Kuskokwim breakup continues
The City of Aniak was placed under ice jam flood watch on Thursday (May 2). National Weather Service officials reported the potential for a jam around 15 miles downriver at Birch Crossing, in effect through Saturday (May 4). Record snowfall weighs on Kuskokwim Ice Road
The Kuskokwim Ice Road remains open from the tundra villages all the way to Aniak, but record snowfall for the region is a heavy burden to bear for the river. “With all this snow and the berms getting bigger, and bigger, and heavier, we've been experiencing cracking in some areas with water coming out,” Kuskokwim Ice Road crew leader Mark Leary said on KYUK’s Talkline on March 8. “This is something we rarely ever see with the ice road.”
