While the Akiachak Huskies couldn't quite beat the Akiak Thunderbolts on Saturday, the three-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 23-point defeat they were dealt last Friday. Akiachak fell just short of Akiak by a score of 40-37. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Akiachak in their matchups with Akiak: they've now lost four in a row.
Kalskag man acquitted on murder charges after igniting 2022 house fire, officials say
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A Kalskag man was acquitted of all charges in a December 2022 murder and arson case in the Western Alaska town of Upper Kalskag. A jury found 28-year-old Levi Levi not guilty on all charges Feb. 13 in a Bethel courthouse. Bethel District Attorney Mark Clark confirmed the acquittal Tuesday in an email.
Kuskokwim Ice Road crew fights weather to keep river traffic flowing
The Kuskokwim Ice Road crew confirmed Friday that travel was safe from the tundra villages of Kasigluk and Nunapitchuk down the Johnson River, and up the Kuskokwim River all the way to Kalskag. However, the crew still urged travelers to prepare for the worst. Safe passage has also been confirmed from Kalskag farther upriver to Aniak.

A well-respected Yup’ik Elder from the Kuskokwim River village of Akiak has a new seat on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)'s National Advisory Council. Mike Williams Sr. is the chief of the Yupiit Nation, what he calls a consortium of federally-recognized tribes. Williams Sr. was named to the 29-member council in December 2023.

Aniak trying to contain fuel spill
The City of Aniak, Alaska is working to manage a Feb. 16 fuel spill that has drenched one property and crossed a main roadway, Boundary Ave., not far from the Kuskokwim River. Aniak, population about 500, is 170 miles upriver from Kwigillingok, which has a major diesel fuel spill of over 8,000 gallons that the Kwig community is trying to keep from reaching the Kuskokwim River.
